Case Study: Building StudyHelpAI Around Visual Verification

StudyHelpAI mobile homework-help interface used in the visual verification case study

StudyHelpAI is one of the products built and operated by HCR Digital Works. The product started from a practical problem: AI can reason well from a homework photo or PDF and still give a bad answer if it misread the source first.

A blurred decimal, cropped graph label, handwritten number, or measured diagram can change the entire problem. Improving the final explanation does not fix that if the underlying input was interpreted incorrectly.

The product decision: separate reading from solving

StudyHelpAI's reviewed visual workflow, called Sol, adds a checkpoint between upload and calculation. For supported worksheet photos and short PDFs, the workflow can show the values, labels, and measurements it interpreted from the source before continuing.

The user can review that reading and correct a misread before the explanation is generated. Confirming those readings does not add another Sol charge.

This does not make visual AI infallible. It changes the failure mode from “silently trust whatever the model saw” to “give the learner a chance to inspect the source interpretation first.”

Why this matters for product QA

Multimodal AI products have at least two separate quality questions:

  1. Did the system interpret the source correctly?
  2. Did it reason correctly from that interpretation?

If those two steps are collapsed together, a wrong answer can be difficult to diagnose. The model may have reasoned correctly from a number that was simply read incorrectly.

StudyHelpAI therefore treats visual interpretation as something worth reviewing on its own. That design choice grew out of repeated testing with phone photos, handwriting, cropped worksheets, graphs, and measured diagrams.

The current learning flow

The live product supports three main starting points:

  • type a homework question
  • upload a still image
  • attach a short PDF

Direct Luna help is available when the source is clear and a lower-cost path is appropriate. Sol is the higher-cost reviewed visual workflow for cases where the source reading itself deserves inspection.

After solving, the goal is still educational rather than just returning a final number. StudyHelpAI presents step-by-step explanations and pairs them with local learning tools such as a scratchpad, calculators, unit conversion, grade planning, worksheet tools, notes, bookmarks, and manual flashcards.

What we deliberately do not claim

Visual verification is a checkpoint, not a guarantee. AI can still make mistakes after the source reading is confirmed. Important answers should still be checked against course materials, a teacher, textbook, or another trusted source.

The product also keeps clear technical limits around uploads and complexity rather than pretending every file is equally suitable for automated solving.

What HCR Digital Works learned from building it

The broader product lesson applies beyond education: when AI operates on visual or extracted source material, make the interpretation observable when the cost of a misread is meaningful.

That can make testing clearer, bug reports more actionable, and user corrections possible before downstream reasoning compounds the error.

It is also a useful example of the HCR Digital Works operating model: solve a real problem, test the workflow repeatedly, keep the scope explicit, and expose uncertainty instead of hiding it behind a confident interface.
